Good Thursday Morning! October 30, 2008

Hi everyone:

Good Thursday Morning! October 30, 2008.  It is a Day #5.

A few notes:

1. An AFES Halloween Parade!

This has become an annual event.  The K-3 grade students will be going on a Halloween Parade tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 31st.   We will parade down Church lane and School St. to the Jay Town offices where we will parade through the community center gym for the Town of Jay personnel, as well as the Seniors and the Jay ARC clients.  Then we will march through the Jay Fire Dept. across the street to the Jay Ambulance.  Then we will proceed down School St. and up E. Forge Street to Main St., then down Main St. to the Town of Black Brook Town Offices.   From there we will parade back to the school by way of E. Forge St. past the Post Office and then in the back entrance of the school.  All are welcome to come and watch this parade.  It is a big event for the children and the town.  And the weather, although a little cool, promises to be sunny!  Be sure your little ones are dressed warm enough!

2. Thank you:

I want to thank all the people that make this possible and a wonderful event of the children:  The town of Jay, the Town of Blackbrook, the Au Sable Forks Fire De3pt., the Au Sable Forks Ambulance, and  the Highway Depts. of both towns for their excellent traffic control to keep our students safe.  Also, thank you to the teachers and aides that help to prepare the students and take them on the parade.  And a big thank you to the parents who support this event every year.

3. Remember to turn your clocks BACK Saturday night!

Have a great day!

Good Friday Morning!

Hi All,

A few notes briefly:

1.  Tonight is the Family Reading Night.  This will take place in the AFES cafeteria from 6:30pm-8:30pm.  The first hour will be for the younger children and the second hour will be for the older children.  The theme is Halloween.   Your children can come in PJs and bring their blanket and pillow.  The atmosphere will be a living room setting and this event is like bedtime story telling.  I know we have a great lineup of readers to read for your children.  Rebecca Douglas, with the help of other PTO members, has been working hard to put this together.  There will be light refreshments.

2. There is a school picture makeup day scheduled for this coming Tuesday, 10/28.  The is for any students who were this past Tuesday (school picture day, or were not able to have their picture taken on that day for any reason.

3. Halloween parade through downtown Au Sables Forks on Friday, Oct. 31.  More information will be sent home this afternoon with the students.

I hope everyone has a great day!

Good Monday Morning, Oct. 20, 2008!

Good Morning!

Today is Monday, Oct. 20, 2008.  It is a day #2.

It has been a while since I have posted to the AFES Blog.  I will be posting once again on a regular basis.  I plan to update my posting 2-3 times weekly at least.

A few notes:

1. The Grandparent’s Breakfast was a huge success.  We had more than 190 adults in to have breakfast with their students.  It was a good time for all.  Thank you to Sierra Hanf (AFES Parent Volunteer Coordinator) for all her help and for the help of other parents with this breakfast.  Thank you to Cassidy Harrell for helping with the tickets sales.  Thank you also to the AFES kitchen staff for an excellent breakfast and the custodians for their excellent work.  And most of all, thank you to all the grandparents and adults that came and made the day for their students!

2. The Book Fair was also a huge success!  The Book Fair is sponsored by the AFES Student Council and the AFES Book Club.  A big thank you to Sierra Hanf, AFES Parent Volunteer Coordinator, for all her efforts in helping with the Book Fair, as well as the other parents who gave of their time to see this year’s fair be such a great success.  Thank you also to all the parents and grandparents that purchased books for their students.  The funds raised by the Book Fair go to support the AFES Book Club, the AFES Student Council, as well as the AFES Library.

3.  AFES hosted 18 Plattsburgh State University Education Students along with their Professor - Caroline Knight, on Thursday Oct. 16th.  They were with us from 9:00am to 11:45am.  During that time we were able to let them see classrooms in action as well as receive presentations from several of AFES staff.   Mrs. Zerrahn presented on reading instruction at the elementary level.  Mrs. Rossi presented on the role of school psychologist and counselor in the elementary school setting.  Mrs. Smith presented on the role and responsibilities of the school nurse.  And finally, Mrs. Patti Tender gave them a tour of a district bus and the bus safety presentation.  I want to thank all of the presenters as well as all the teachers and staff that made this day an awesome success for these aspiring teachers.  It is an honor that AFES is chosen for such programs and it is largely due to the excellent job that the faculty staff do here at AFES.  Professionals in the area recognize this and call on AFES to assist in their training of new teachers.

4. School Pictures tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 21).

5. Book Club meeting tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 21).

6. PTO Family Reading Night here at AFES this Friday, Oct. 24th from 6:30pm-8:30pm.  The first hour is for younger children and the second hour is for the older elementary students.  Halloween is the theme.   Light refreshments will be served.

I will continue to update the blog so keep checking.

Good Monday Morning, Sept. 22, 2008

Hi All,

Good Monday Morning, Sept. 22, 2008.  It is a day 3.

My term in jury duty finished on Wednesday afternoon and I was able to return to work on Thursday.  Yeah!  It was great to get back to work.  I would like to say thank you to Mr. Remillard for taking care of things while I was out.  As always, he did an excellent job.

Other Notes:

1.  The PTO Fall Fundraiser kick off was held on Thursday, Sept. 18th at 1:15pm and it went very well.  Please remember: that it is through this fund raiser that we get the majority of our support for many of the programs we offer at AFES such as: Gary Finney Square Dancing instruction, in-school assemblies, field trips, etc.  Please support the students at AFES by supporting this important fund raiser.

2. The initial Student Council meeting was held on Thursday, Sept. 18th at 2:00pm.  There are 47 students that have signed up for the AFES student council and 39 students were in attendance for this first meeting.

3. The initial meeting for the AFES Book Club will be held on Tuesday, Sept 23rd.

4. A regional BSA rep. will be here at AFES on Wed. 24th to give a presentation to all boys in grades 1-6 regarding the Boy Scouts of America.

5. There will be an Early Release Day on Tuesday Sept. 30th.

6. We will be holding a “Grandparent’s Breakfast” on Wed. Oct. 1st for students K-grade 2, and Friday Oct. 3rd for students 3-6.  The breakfasts will run from 7:45am to 8:45am.  If the grandparents are unable to come, a parent, aunt or uncle may substitute.  We are asking if you can sign up so we have some idea of how many are coming. We are also asking that if you are coming and can prepay that will help the speed of the serving line greatly.  If you cannot sign up or prepay, you are still welcome to attend.  We do not want to exclude anyone.  We do ask that you limit the number attending for any student (family) to 4 as we have a limited serving capacity.

I would love to hear from you.  So feel free to write a comment anytime just by clicking on “comments” at the bottom of the blog and writing your comment.

I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful fall weather!

Good Monday Morning, Sept. 15, 2008.

Hi All,

Good Monday Morning, Sept. 15, 2008.  It is a day 3.

I was chosen to serve as an alternate juror for jury duty, which means I have to be in court every day.  I started on Tuesday, Sept. 9th.  You may have noticed I have not been in the building much and Mr. Remillard has been sitting in for me.  He does an excellent job.  Thank you, Mr. Remillard.  I expect to finish with jury duty on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week, Sept. 16 or 17th.  Believe me, I truly look forward to getting back in the building and working with the students and staff which is my love and what I had waited for all summer!   But civic duty calls for now.

A new face:

I want to welcome a new face to AFES:  Miss Heather Ryan of Keeseville.  Miss Ryan will substitute for Mrs. Dragoon, one of our AIS teachers, while Mrs. Dragoon is out on her maternity leave.   Miss Ryan will be with us until Thanksgiving.  Heather is a graduate of AVCS.  She holds both a bachelors in elementary education and is currently working to finish her masters degree in curriculum and instruction.  She is certified in Elementary Education.  If you see Miss Ryan be sure to welcome her!

Other Notes:

1. We had our Bus Safety Presentation Sept. 11 & 12.  All classes had an opportunity to get on a bus in the AFES parking lot, one class at a time, where they received instruction on bus safety, including the rules of the bus, as well as how to cross the street/road when boarding or off-loading a bus.  This instruction was presented by two AVCS bus drivers.  The bus does not actually travel during this presentation it remains stationary in the parking lot.  The drivers set up cones to simulate a road way.  The time that the students spend on the bus is so the drivers can show emergency exits, how sit and ride a bus properly and safely, etc.

2. The AFES PTO held its first meeting of the 08-09 school year last Thursday night at 6:30pm in the cafeteria. It was a huge success with more than 20 parents & staff in attendance.  We had an enjoyable and fun time while accomplishing a lot a great business to start the year with tremendous support for the students and staff of AFES.

3.  The PTO Fall Fundraiser will kick off on Thursday, Sept. 18th at 1:15pm in the gym.  This is the biggest fundraiser of t he year which helps to support many AFES programs such as Gary Finney Square Dancing instruction, assemblies, field trips, etc.  Please support AFES by supporting this important fund raiser.

4. The initial Student Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 16th, will have to be postponed.  I will hold this meeting on Thursday, Sept. 18th at 2:00pm.

5. Book Club will start on Tuesday, Sept 23rd.

6. There will be an Early Release Day on Tuesday Sept. 30th.

Please feel free to comment on the blog.  Just click on “comments” at the bottom of the blog.  It would be great to hear from you.

I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful fall weather!

Good Tuesday Morning, Sept. 9, 2008.

Hi All,

Good Tuesday Morning, Sept. 9, 2008.  It is a day 4.  And let the AFES Blog begin for the 08-09 school year!  Please feel free to comment.  It would be great to hear from some of you.

The students are back!  It was so good to see them come in Thursday morning, all excited and ready to get to school.  The staff and I were equally excited to see the students come back!

The Open House was a huge success.  The students and parents were happy to be able to visit their classroom and meet their teacher as well as their classmates before the 1st day of school.  It was very apparent Thursday morning that it was beneficial for the students as they came in the building knowing where they were going - with excitement and confidence!   Thank you to the PTO for the welcome banner over the front door and the ice cream!

I also want to welcome new staff members and those with name changes.

New to AFES:

John Thatcher - Computer Teacher, Math AIS, & Building Technology Support.  Mr. Thatcher is not new to AFES or AVCS either.  He has worked with the district for a number of years as a math teacher and more recently as the district technology coordinator.  John will now be in our building full time to provide computer instruction for grades 2-6, Math AIS at all levels, and provide technology support for AFES.  (Mr. LaFranca is now full time at Keeseville Elementary providing the same services there.)  Mr. Thatcher is a great addition and asset to our building.   Welcome Mr. Thatcher!

Amanda Deyoe - AFES Permanent Building Substitute.  Although Amanda is not really new to the building, because she has subbed here and actually did her student teaching here, also she is not new to the district as she worked at the MHS last year, but she is new in her position here as the AFES full-time building sub.  Amanda is a great addition and asset to AFES.  Welcome Miss Deyoe!

Some exciting events that took place over the summer:

Miss Bruno, one of our Kindergarten teachers, got married this summer and is now known as Mrs. Bailey.  Congratulations to Mrs. Bailey!

Miss Hughes, one of our 1st grade teachers, also got married this summer and is now known as Mrs. Bennett.  Congratulations to Mrs. Bennett!

Mr. Harley Eaton also got married this summer and is now known Mr. … Eaton!  Congratulations Mr. Eaton.

Other Notes:

1. We will be having our Bus Safety Presentation on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 11 & 12.  All classes will get on a bus in the AFES parking lot, one class at a time, where they will receive instruction on bus safety and the rules of the bus by an AVCS bus driver.  This presentation takes about 30 minutes per class.   The bus does not actually travel anywhere it remains stationary.  They are on the bus so the driver can show emergency exits, how sit and ride a bus properly and safely, etc.

2.  The PTO Fall Fundraiser will kick off on Thursday, Sept. 18th at 1:15pm in the gym.  This is the big fundraiser which helps to support many AFES programs such as Gary Finney Square Dancing instruction, assemblies, etc.  Please support AFES by supporting this important fund raiser.

3. Student Council will start on Tuesday, Sept. 16th.

4. Book Club will start on Tuesday, Sept 23rd.

5. There will be an Early Release Day on Tuesday Sept. 30th.

6. Jury Duty: I have been called for jury duty starting Tuesday, Sept. 9th.  I do not know if I will be chosen for the jury yet, or if I am chosen how long I will be serving.  Mr. Remillard will be overseeing the school in my absence.  Civic Duty calls!

I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful fall weather!

Good Wednesday Morning, June 18, 2008.

Hi All,

Good Wednesday Morning, June 18, 2008.  It is a day 5.

Here are a few notes:

3. The Book Club had to be cancelled yesterday because the HS started Regents and that means that there are no regular classes as of yesterday.  So that means that there is no bussing from the Middle High School, which is the bussing that is used to take students home after clubs. We will hopefully reschedule the Book Club meeting/field trip some time during the school day.  If we are able to reschedule, we will send home a notice regarding this.

4. The Student Council has to be cancelled yesterday also, due to the same reason as the Book Club cancellation – no bussing.  We will hopefully reschedule the Student Council meeting some time during the school day. If we are able to reschedule, we will send home a notice regarding this.
