Good Wednesday Morning, March 12, 2008

Hello Everyone!

What a great day in the valley!  And, another exciting day at AFES!

Registrations for the AFES Student Council Talent Show are coming in.  Due to the number of interested students who are trying to put together they acts, we are extending the registration until Thursday, March 13th to give everyone who wants to perform a chance to register.

I want to give a BIG THANK YOU to those parents/community members that shop at Target and have designated AFES to receive Target’s “Take Charge of Education” donation.  We received a check from Target for $25.85, based on 1% of purchases made using a REDcard (Target Visa Credit Card, Target Credit Card or Target Check Card).  If anyone else uses any of these cards while shopping at Target, we would appreciate your support also.

Collect those Campbell Soup labels for AFES!  You may send them in with your student or drop them off yourself.  There is a Campbell Soup container in our lobby where they can be deposited

Also, continue collecting those Box Tops!  We are on a “Trip Across America”.  Each Box Top = miles.  Our goal is to go from Au Sable Forks Elementary to San Francisco.  We are already to Kalamazoo, Mich.   Our next town is Gary, Indiana.  Can anyone name the Broadway Musical that has a song named “Gary, Indiana” in it?  And better yet, can anyone name the younger actor that sang the song in the 1962 movie version of the musical? (The song appears twice in the play, the first time by the main character, the second time by this younger actor.)

The Au Sable Valley Players will be presenting a sampling of songs from their play “Grease” this afternoon at 1:30pm for the
students and staff of AFES.  We look forward to seeing and hearing them perform.  They will present the entire play in the
MSHS auditorium on March 13, 14, 15, at 7:30pm and March 16 at 2:00pm

The 6th grade will continue their NYS Math Test today.

I hope everyone has a great day! - Dean Lincoln

Good Monday Morning, March 3, 2008

Congratulations to all the students that participated in the Regional Spelling Bee Friday evening, Feb. 29th at Saranac Central. There were 11 school districts that participated, and 45 students were in attendance to compete. In order to participate at the regional level each of them had to win their grade level at their respective buildings. The alternates, 2nd place winners of their building level spelling bee, were also in attendance to support their classmates as well as replace them if for some reason the building level champion was unable to participate. The AFES building Champions and Alternates were, 4th grade - Champion: Madison Hall, and Alternate: Payson Baer; 5th grade - Champion: Hunter Guennel, and Alternate: Jessica Malskis; 6th grade - Champion: Ashlee Estees, and Alternate: Logan Raboczkay. All of our champions did their best but only one of the 45 could be Champion of the Regional Bee, in the end 6th grader Nelson Moore of Saranac Central was the winner. Nelson will now go on to compete at the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May.
Schools throughout New York State, including AFES, will be administering the New York State Math Tests to grades 3-5 this week and the grades 6-8 next week. AFES grades 3-5 students will be taking the tests on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The AFES 6th graders will be taking the test Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Please be sure the students get a good night’s rest on the nights before the tests as well as a good breakfast each morning. These two items are proven to be very helpful for students taking tests.
The PTO Flower Bulb Fund Raiser begins today. This fund raiser will run until March 26. The funds raised from this event are earmarked to support the student transportation to the Lake Placid Center for the Arts for next year.
The PTO will be sponsoring a Staff Appreciation Lunch for the entire Staff of AFES on Thursday, March 6th.

     Reminder:
Early Release Day on Thursday, March 6th. AFES will dismiss at 12:15pm.

Remember: Daylight Savings Time begins 2:00 a.m. Sunday, March 9th.  Turn your clocks ahead!

Have a great Monday - Dean Lincoln
