Good Wednesday Morning, March 26, 2008

Good Morning,

I hope everyone is having a great week.  The weather prediction is for a warmer day today and we are ready for that!

A few notes and upcoming events:

1. We have a new permanent building substitute.  Her name is Mrs. Karen Manning. She is a certified elementary teacher.  So when you see her in the building, be sure to say ‘hi’ and welcome her to AFES!

2. We also have several student teachers in the building for the next 6 weeks.  They are a great group of young teachers eager to be mentored by our outstanding staff.  You will see them around the building so be sure to say hi and welcome them to AFES.

3. The auditions for the talent show will be held during the next 3 days (Wed.-Friday).  This is not an elimination audition, but rather a chance for the students to experience performing their act in front of several adults (staff) and a few students prior to having to perform in front a full audience.

4. The PTO Flower Bulb Fundraiser will end today, March 26th.  I hope you had a chance to get your order in for these spring bulbs.

5. Our 5th and 6th graders will receive a “Human Growth and Development Presentation” by our district Nurse-Teacher, Carrie Brand, will take place on Thursday and Friday, March 27-28.  This is an annual presentation to the 5th and 6th graders in the district.

6. Remember that the Talent Show, sponsored by the AFES Student Council, will take place Friday, April 4th at 6:30pm in the AFES gym.   We have 26 performances registered between AFES and Holy Name Elementary Schools, with a total of 50 students participating.  It promises to be a great evening and the students are certainly excited to show their talents!  (Note: anyone that would like to help with this event, please contact me at: 647-5503 or email me at: dwlincoln2002@hotmail.com. 8. Also, remember the AVCS Staff Basketball Game, taking place on Sunday, April 6th, at 4:00pm.  This is a match between the Elementary Staff from both elementary schools of the AVCS District referred to as “Hulbert’s Heroes” and the Middle–High School staff, referred to as “Marlow’s Magic II”.  (The teams are named after Mr. Kevin Hulbert – Principal of Keeseville Elementary and founder of the staff basketball games, and Mrs. Laura Marlow, Principal of the AVCS Hugh School.)  All funds from this event will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

9. The Book Club met yesterday after school and they have finished reading “Shiloh” and have started reading “Smart Dog”.  It was decided at yesterday’s meeting that the Book Club will be taking a field trip to the Village Bookstore, in downtown Au Sable Forks.  The date and time have not yet been decided.

Good Wednesday Morning, March 19, 2008

Good Morning All,

Ok, now the answer to the question: Who played the part of “Winthrop Paroo”, the 7 year old brother of “Marian”, who also sang the song “Gary, Indiana” the second time it appears in the movie? I gave the clue: He was born in Oklahoma in 1954. The next clue was: He also appeared in the movie, “American Graffiti”. You know now that the Musical is “The Music Man”. The young actor was Ron Howard! Some of us who are old enough remember Ron as Opie Taylor in the Andy Griffith Show, and then as Richie Cunningham in Happy Days. Ron also appeared in 71 other movies, TV shows, and plays. He has also produced 47 movies and shows, as well as directed 28.

Spring Pictures will take place today!

CFES will meet today after school.

Good Tuesday Morning, March 18, 2008

Good Morning All,

Ok, now the answer to the question: What Broadway Musical had the song ‘Gary, Indiana’ in it?  It is “The Music Man”!  It first appeared on Broadway in 1957.  The Book, Lyrics, and Music were written by Meredith Willson.  The lead roles, “Harold Hill” and “Marian” were played by Robert Preston and Barbara Cook.  The first movie “The Music Man” was released in 1962, starring Robert Preston as “Harold Hill”, Shirley Jones (of Partridge Family fame) as “Marian”.  The Broadway play ran for over 3 years and showed 1,375 performances.  It has been on Broadway several times since, with Harold Hill being played by such performers as Eddie Albert and Dick Van Dyke.

So, now you know the name of the show and movie, the question remains: Who played the part of “Winthrop Paroo”, the 7 year old brother of “Marian”, who also sang the song “Gary, Indiana” the second time it appears in the movie?  I gave the clue: He was born in Oklahoma in 1954.  The next clue are: He also appeared in the movie, “American Graffiti”.  Email guesses to: dwlincoln2002@hotmail.com

Student Council and Game Club are meeting today after school.

Good Monday Morning, March 17, 2008

Hello Everyone!

The PTO sponsored an “Ice Cream Social” for the students of AFES last Friday.  It was a huge success.  This was given as a reward for their hard work on the NYS Math Tests during the past two weeks.  Thank you PTO.

Spring Pictures will be taken this Wednesday, March 19th.

There will be a Poison Prevention presentation to all students, K-6 on Wednesday 3/19.  The presentations will be to Grades 3-6 at 9:00-9:45 and Grades K-2 from 9:45-10:30.  This is an educational presentation at their level to teach the students the dangers of poisons with the hope of preventing of any incident.

We had a lot of students sign up for the Talent Show which will take place on Friday, April 4th.  There are 26 performances, involving approx. 56 students between AFES and Holy Name.  We look forward to this great event.  We will be holding the “auditions” (time to practice their performance in front of a few staff & students) next week.  I will notify each performing student of their day/time.

The 3rd Grade class will be visiting their foster grandparents/pen pals at the Keene Valley Neighborhood House on Thursday, 3/20.

The PTO Spring Bulbs Fund Raiser will end on Tuesday, 3/26.  Be sure to get you order in before then!

The AFES will be hosting a “Pennies for Patients” coin drive from March 17-April 4th.  This is a fund raiser is to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  The funds raised here at AFES will be combined with the funds raised by Keeseville Elementary by their Pennies for Patients drive and the funds raised at the Staff Basketball Game on April 6th.  We hope that through these efforts we can help to make a difference for those inflicted with blood cancers and help research find a cure for these diseases.

As I had mentioned previously, the next stop in our Box Tops “Trip Across America” will be Gary, Indiana.  I have had  three staff that have given correct answers to: Can anyone name the Broadway Musical that has a song named “Gary, Indiana” in it?
I have had only one who could answer:  Can anyone name the younger actor that sang the song in the 1962 movie version of the musical? (The song appears twice in the play, the first time by the main character, the second time by this younger actor.)   Any guesses?  Guesses can be emailed to me at dwlicnoln2002@hotmail.com.  A clue: the young actor was born in Oklahoma in 1954.  NOTE: I have not received any guesses from the parents/community.  Be brave; email a guess for both or either question.  I will reveil the answer to the name of the musical tomorrow (Tuesday), and the answer to the young actor on Wednesday.

NO SCHOOL this Friday (3/21) or this coming Monday (3/24).  Have a Happy Easter!

I hope everyone has a wonderful day! - Dean Lincoln

Thank you to the Au Sable Valley Players for their performance at AFES yesterday afternoon. Diane White and Steve Collier brought the performers of the play “Grease” to AFES and presented a preview of the play. They performed several of their songs and dance routines. They did an outstanding job and thoroughly delighted AFES students and staff. We wish them good luck on their public performances tonight-Sunday, March 13th-16th.
