Au Sable Forks Elementary

Hi everyone: 

A few notes:  

1. The AFES Spelling Bee went great this morning!  Congratulations to all the students who qualified to participate for their grade level and congratulations to all the grade level winners.  Thank you to Mrs. Estes for running this program again for us this year.  She does an outstanding job.  She will be announcing the winners..

2. The AFES Student Council is hosting a Food Drive that runs through Monday Feb. 9^th.  This is to support our local food bank which is critically low on supplies.  If it is possible, please help us with this important drive.  Food can be sent in with your student or dropped off in the school lobby.

3. Mr. Hoey held his annual swim for grades 4-6 on Wednesday, Jan. 28^th.  It was a huge success!  Thank you Mr. Hoey!

4. This Thursday, Feb. 5^th is an early release day.  Students will be dismissed at 12:00pm. 

5. There will be a SRA Assembly this Friday at 1:15pm in the AFES gym.

Hi everyone: 

A few notes:  

1. This week is regents week at the Middle/High School, therefore there will be no late bussing and so we will not have any afterschool clubs this week at AFES.

2. The AFES Student Council will be hosting a Food Drive starting next week to help out our local food bank.  If it is possible, please help us with this important drive.  Due to the increased need by families during these difficult times, the food bank is in need of supplies.

3. Mr. Hoey will be holding his annual swim for grades 4-6 this Wednesday, Jan. 28^th.  This will be held during the day and the students will be bused from AFES to the AVCS Middle-High School and back to AFES.  This is a great opportunity for the students to receive some initial swimming instruction and a chance for them to swim with their classmates.  Thank you Mr. Hoey!

4. AFES will be holding its annual 4-6 Grade Spelling Bee on Feb. 3^rd at 9:00am in the gym.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  If your child is a participant in this event, you will receive a letter home.  There were spell offs held in the classrooms to determine which students would participate in the school spelling bee.   This is always an important and exciting event.  Thank you to Mrs. Laurie Estes for all her hard work and dedication to this event year after year.

5. Regional Spelling Bee – each grade level winner of the AFES Spelling Bee will be participating in the regional spelling which will be held at Saranac Central on Feb. 27^th.  This is a huge event with many school districts participating.  The winner of this event goes on to compete in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

1. This week (Jan. 19-23) we are administering the NYS ELA Assessments to the6th grade students. 

2.  The Flu Clinic was held yesterday and was a great success!

3. Last Friday, January 16^th, the PTO hosted another “Family Reading Night”.  It was another great success with great readers.  Thank you to all the great readers for their contribution of time and effort to help make this night a memorable one for children and adults alike.  Thank you to Rebecca Douglas for organizing this event.  Thank you to Sierra and Cory Hanf of the Hollywood Theater for the donation of popcorn, and thank you to all the other PTO members that help to make this such a successful event.

1. This week (Jan. 13-15) we will be administering the NYS ELA Assessments to the students in Grades 3-5.  These are important tests.   Please be sure your student(s) is well rested and has had a good breakfast each day prior to the test. The 6^th grade NYS ELA Assessments will be administered next week (Jan. 20-22).

Hi everyone: 

A few notes:

2.  There will be a PTO meeting tonight, Thursday, Jan 8th at 6:30pm in the cafeteria.  We had to cancel the December meeting due to the busyness of the season and the poor weather, so we will catch up tonight.  But as always, President Laura Campbell will keep us on task to get through everything in a timely manner.  Laura recognizes that everyone has busy schedules and other responsibilities and she wants to be sensitive to that.  So Mrs. Campbell has set a goal of getting through the meeting by 8:00pm at the latest whenever possible.  Thank you Mrs. Campbell for you understanding and consideration. And remember that there is child care provided by the AVCS Key Club at PTO meetings.

Happy New Year to Everyone! 

Welcome back to school and welcome to the New Year!  I am very excited to have the students and staff back at school.  It is too quiet without them!  A school is not meant to be empty and quiet.  It is supposed to be filled with kids learning and teachers teaching!  I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and were able to spend time with family and friends.

A few notes:  

1. AFES will be hosting Essex County Health Dept. tomorrow, Wed. Jan. 7^th as they provide free flu immunizations for the students as well as immunizations for the adults (at a cost of $20.00 for the adults).

Hi everyone: 

A reminder:

1. The District Combined Elementary Holiday Concert was held last night.  What a huge success.  The 3/4 & 5/6 choruses and the band performed in front a packed house!  They all did an outstanding job!

2. There will be an Early Release Day today, Thursday, December 11^th.  Students will be dismissed at 12:00pm.  There will be no aftercare.

3.  The PTO meeting scheduled for this evening, Thursday, Dec. 11^th HAS BEEN CANCELLED!  See you at the regularly scheduled meeting in Jan.  

4. The Craft Day will be held tomorrow, Friday, December 12^th.  This event is organized and run by Mrs. Teena Snow and sponsored by the PTO.

5.  The AFES In-House Holiday Concert will be held on Tuesday, December 16^th at 11:45am in the gym.

6. Wednesday Dec. 17^th the PTO will hold the Fundraiser Prize assembly with the Limo-lunch for those students that qualified. This assembly will begin at 1:15pm.

A reminder:

1. Our AFES Elementary Chorus performed at the Tree Lighting Ceremony last Saturday night.  They did an outstanding job and we can all be very proud of them. 

2. The 3^rd grade visited their pen pal/foster grandparents at the Keene Neighborhood House in Keene Valley yesterday.

3. The district Combined Elementary Holiday Concert will take place this evening, Wednesday, 12/10, at 7:00pm.  The concert will take place at the Middle-High School auditorium.  The students need to arrive by 6:30pm.

4. There will be an Early Release Day on Thursday, December 11^th.  Students will be dismissed at 12:00pm.  There will be no aftercare.

5. There will be a PTO meeting Thursday, Dec. 11^th.  The meeting will be held at 6:00pm (rather than the normal 6:30pm) and we plan to be done by 7:30pm.  This is to accommodate everyone’s busy holiday season/schedule and to allow the custodial staff to leave a little earlier.

6.  The AFES In-House Holiday Concert will be held on Tuesday, December 16^th at 11:45am in the gym.

2. We will also be having our SRA Assembly today (Friday) 12/5at 1:15pm also in the AFES gym.

3. Our Elementary Chorus will be leading off the Tree Lighting Ceremony tomorrow night (Saturday 12/6) at the clock in Au Sable Forks.  The event starts at 6:00pm and the students perform as the opening act.  Please come and support the town and our students!

As we know December is a very busy month with a lot going on.
A few notes:

1. 1^st Quarter Awards Assembly

            We will hold our 1^st quarter awards assembly tomorrow (Friday) 12/5 at 12:15pm in the AFES gym.  Students will be receiving recognition for Honor Roll, High Honor Roll, Citizenship, PE, Music, and Art.

2. SRA Assembly

            We will have an Student Recognition Award Assembly also on Friday 12/5.  It will take place at 1:15pm immediately following the 1^st quarter assembly in the AFES gym.

3. Dec. 9^th – 3^rd Grade will be going to the Keen Valley Neighborhood house to visit their pen pal/foster grandparents.

4. Dec. 9^th – Combined Dress Rehearsal in the morning at the MHS.

5. Dec. 10^th – Combined Concert with Keeseville Elementary at the MHS auditorium at 7:00pm.

6. Dec. 11^th  - Early Release Day – Dismissal at 12:00pm.

7. Dec. 11^th – PTO meeting at 6:00pm Sharp.  This is a change in time – earlier than normal because the building will close earlier that day and to allow people to get home earlier due to  the busy holiday season.   

8. Dec. 12^th – Craft Day with Mrs. Teena Snow and the PTO

9. Dec. 15^th – AFES Dress Rehearsal for the Holiday concert.

10. Dec. 16^th – AFES Holiday Concert at 11:45am

11. Dec. 17^th – Limo Lunch and Prize assembly in the for the PTO fall fundraiser

12. Dec. 18^th – Grade 3 Cookie Exchange

13. Dec. 18^th –Grade 1 Visits the Peru SPCA to deliver the “presents” collected for the animals.

14. Dec 19^th – Last day of school for 2008!  Have a great Christmas and an nice break.  We will see students again on Jan. 5^th.
